Joining words are Conjunctions. Practice makes perfect. So get on with it. The answers are given in the brackets.

Note 1: When a sentence begins with a conjunction a comma must be added. Example: The box was heavy. I lifted it. [Although//eventhough the box was heavy, I lifted it.] Though and yet should be used together. Yet cannot be used alone in Conjunctions.

Note 2: As soon as will be used to indicate immediate action/reaction. Example: The hot milk fell on my leg. I started crying. [As soon as the hot milk fell on my leg, I started crying.]

When the phrase As soon as is used, the word immediately is not required. Example: The thief saw the policeman. He ran away immediately. [As soon as the thief saw the policeman, he ran away.]

Note 3: When there are two conjunctions in a sentence, a comma is not required. Example: No sooner-than; Rather-than; Hardly-when; Though-yet.

Note 4: We always begin the sentence with “either..or” or “Neither..nor” Example; He is not sincere. He is not hardworking. [Neither is he sincere, nor hardworking.]

Note 5:  Unless/ since to ne used in the beginning of the sentence.

He did not come to school. He was ill. [ Since he was ill, he did not come to school.]

EXERCISE:

  1. Small families are happy. This is certain. [ That small are families are happy, it is certain] [Small families are happy, that is certain.]
  2. He knows everything. He pretends ignorance. [ He knows everything, yet he pretends ignorance.]
  3. You provide some more support. The shelf will fall down. [Unless you provide with some more support, the shelf will fall down]
  4. A note has to be sent. It has to first be inserted into an envelope.[If a note has to be sent, it has to first be inserted into an envelop.]
  5. This proved extremely difficult. It was finally accomplished by the Chief Executive. [ Although this proved extremely difficult, it was finally accomplished by the Chief executive.]
  6. He arrived at the station. The train had left. [As soon as he arrived at the station, the train had left.]
  7. I came early. I could not get a seat.[ Even though I came early, I could not get a seat.]
  8. You will make mistakes. Pay attention to your work. [Pay attention to your work or you will make mistakes.]
  9. Write this down. You may forget. [Write this down lest you may forget.]
  10. I had taken my shoes off. I found that we had to leave again.[No sooner had I had taken my shoes off than we had to leave again.]
  11. I have a salad for dinner. I can have ice cream for dessert. [If I have a salad for dinner then I can have ice cream for dessert.]
  12. Bianca wore her rain boots. Her feet stayed dry during the storm. [ Bianca wore her rain boots, therefore, her feet stayed dry during the storm.]
  13. A man was drowning. He shouted for help. [ As the man was drowning, he shouted for help.]
  14. It is not a new car. It is reliable. [Although it is not a new car, it is reliable.]
  15. take the cheque. The cash may not be sufficient. [Take the check as the cash may not be sufficient]
  16. He thought Ritu was honest. He lent her the money. [ As he thought Ritu was honest, he lent her the money.][He lent Ritu the money as he thought she was honest.]
  17. Everyone was drenched by the rain. It came down so hard. [ Since the rain came down so hard, everyone got drenched by it.][ Everyone was drenched by the rain since it came down so hard.][ The rain that came down so hard, drenched everyone.]
  18. Wise men welcome advice. Fools scorn it. [Wise men welcome advice while fools scorn it.]
  19. There was little scope of success. I tried hard. [There was little scope of success nevertheless I tried hard.]
  20. She will win the prize. She deserves it. [She will win the prize as she deserves it.]
  21. You will surely be late. Hurry up! [You will surely be late unless you hurry up.][Unless you hurry up, you will surely be late.]
  22. The trekker got lost due to the heavy fog. They misplaced their map as well. [Besides getting lost due to the heavy fog, the trekkers also misplaced their map.]
  23. She has to apologise. He will not meet her again if she does not do so.[He will not meet her unless she apologises.]
  24. Swarna aske me a question. I was unable to answer. [Swarna asked me a question that I was unable to answer.] [ I was unable to answer the question that Swarna asked me.]
  25. You helped Tanya. She will always be grateful. [Tanya will always be grateful for your help.]
  26. I heard you won the prize. I was extremely delighted. [I was extremely delighted on hearing that you won the prize.]
  27. He is being victimised. He keeps a level head. [Although he is being victimised, he keeps a level head.]
  28. She was a musician. Did you know? [Did you know that she was a musician?]
  29. The piper played. The children danced. [The children danced while the piper played.]
  30. I will come to school. I am not ill. [I will come to school if I am not ill.]
