Note 1: When a sentence begins with a conjunction a comma must be added. Example: The box was heavy. I lifted it. [Although//even though the box was heavy, I lifted it.] Though and yet should be used together. Although/though/even though shows contrast.
action/reaction. Example: The hot milk fell on my leg. I started crying. [As soon as the hot milk fell on my leg, I started crying.]
When the phrase As soon as is used, the word immediately is not required. Example: The thief saw the policeman. He ran away immediately. [As soon as the thief saw the policeman, he ran away.]
Note 3: When there are two conjunctions in a sentence, a comma is not required. Example: No sooner-than; Rather-than; Hardly-when; Though-yet.
Note 4: We always begin the sentence with “either..or” or “Neither..nor” Example; He is not sincere. He is not hardworking. [Neither is he sincere, nor hardworking.]
Note 5: Unless/ since to ne used in the beginning of the sentence.
He did not come to school. He was ill. [ Since he was ill, he did not come to school.] {Because, As, Since show Cause or reason.}
EXERCISE:
- Rohan made twelve runs. He was caught at the wicket. [Rohan made twelve runs before he was caught at the wicket.]
- He must work very hard. He must win the prize. [He must work very hard to win the prize.]
- This is the hospital. I was born here. [This is the hospital where I was born.]
- I returned home. I saw the servant absent. [When I returned home I saw the servant absent.]
- I have some duties. I must perform them. [I have some duties to perform.]
- A good education is the best road to success in life. He believes that.[ He believes that a good education is the best road to success.]
- He worked hard. His aim was to gain promotion. [He worked hard to gain promotion.]
- Allison reached the spot. We were to meet there. [Allison reached the spot where we were to meet.]
- You cannot recover fast. Refrain from smoking. [You cannot recover fast unless you refrain from smoking.]
- Mumbai is densely populated. It is one of the major cities in the country. [ Being one of the major cities in the country, Mumbai is densely populated.]
- Anil got married suddenly. This took everyone by surprise. [Anil’s marriage took everyone by surprise.]
- He did not visit Delhi. He did not visit Agra. [Neither did he visit Delhi, nor Agra.]
- Hari did not write. Hari did not read. [Neither did Hari write, nor read.]
- I will go there. You desire it. [Since you desire it, I will go there.]
- He had broken the window. The teacher punished him. [The teacher punished him because he had broken the window.]
