Once again, in my attempt to consolidate all my work over the years as a teacher for the English Language, I am putting forth a few prompts for the eager writers.

  1. A rogue planet with strange properties collides with our sun, and after everything is over, worldwide temperatures fall drastically. Write from the perspective of someone trying to keep his tropical fruit trees alive.
  2.  Elaborate on the significance of “Time is Money.”
  3. Write a short story which has its central idea in the phrase, ” Advice not taken.”
  4. Write a short story which illustrates the truth of the statement, “Rumour is a great traveller”.
  5. Write an original short story that concludes with the sentence,” After all was over, I realized that every cloud has a silver lining.”
  6. Write an original short story beginning with, “The water was cold. I took a deep breath and jumped.”
  7. Write an original short story that begins with the words, ” Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
  8. After your exams, you with your family and friends plan a mountaineering expedition/trek. Each day of the seven-day trek, reveals a new aspect of nature that you have never been exposed to. Describe your adventure, the sights, the sensations and your emotions during this expedition.
  9. Describe the first time you rode the bicycle all by yourself. Bring out the thrills, the fears, the sense of achievement that you experienced.
  10. Describe the plight of od street animals.
  11. Imagine you are walking down the corridor of a museum when suddenly one of the exhibits starts moving. Write a short story about what happens next. Give the story a suitable title.
  12. Narrate an incident in your life when you have performed well under pressure.
  13. What makes a better leader? Someone who is loved or someone who is feared?
  14. Describe the best gift you have ever given or received.
  15. Write an original short story on “An abandoned bungalow.”
  16. Write an original short story beginning with,” As he was walking along the beach, he saw something glittering..”
  17. Write an original short story beginning with.” Josh walked into the bank to withdraw some money and to his surprise…”
  18. Write an original short story beginning with,” Looking out of the restaurant’s big window, Alicia noticed a man watching her intently..”
  19. Write about a special quality that makes you different from others.
  20. An inspiring book that you read recently.
  21. An amusing event that you remember.
  22. Describe a place that you recently visited. Give details of its people, their food, clothes and customs. Make your account as interesting as possible.
  23. Imagine that you have just experienced an earthquake. Though you and your family members are safe your neighbours need help. Write a narrative describing how you handled the situation.
  24. Imagine you are a sportsperson. Write about a day when someone in your team had shown no sportsmanship on the field. Mention how you felt and how that person should have behaved instead.
  25. Begin your story with,” Half an hour after the car had been driven away, the garage owner made a startling discovery. He rushed to the telephone…”
  26. As I turned on the radio the announcer said,” Cyclone. now affecting all districts, will continue throughout the day…” I switched it off in despair.
  27. If I had a billion dollars.
  28. What my younger sibling taught me.
  29. What do I do when I feel sad.
  30. The television shows that have mattered to me most.
  31. A book that has left an indelible impression on my mind.
  32. Me and my big mouth!
  33. What would be like in a world where dreams came true.
  34. A journey that has changed me.
  35. If you could choose to go to space at any point in your life, where would it be and why?
  36. Think about one of your favourite stories from your childhood and then rewrite it with an alternate ending.
  37. What is your favourite time/season of the year and why?
  38. Write a story about a world where animals take over and put all humans in a zoo. Describe your take on it.
  39. The one thing that I am afraid to lose.
  40. The moment I overcame a fear.
